At Retreat Yourself, we know that the best breakthroughs happen when you step away from the daily grind and focus on what truly matters - your people.
If you’re tired of the usual team-building games and conference rooms that don’t deliver lasting results, it’s time to consider something different. Our corporate and leadership retreats offer a powerful way to invest in your team, with real returns in productivity, engagement, and performance.
What actually is a leadership retreat?
Well let's start with what it isn't... it's not a jolly!
It's not a work 'knees up' for the team to let their hair down.
The primary aim of a 'standard' (non business retreat is to create a space for individuals to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life, reconnect with themselves, and gain clarity, insight, and renewal – most people we know could most certainly do with a dose of that on prescription!
A retreat is a purposeful withdrawal or departure from our usual environment, routine, or activities for a period of time - often for rest, relaxation, reflection, personal growth, or spiritual development. They’re different to a standard holiday which is quite simply time off from everyday routine. Retreats are purposeful removal from your hectic environment to heal, rest, rejuvenate, recharge and take a step back to make some positive changes or modifications to the way you live so you don’t just return and jump straight back on the hamster wheel of life!
So when you translate that into the context of business and leadership then our definition of a leadership retreat would be...
"A space for a team to disconnect from the stresses and pressures of the business. To reconnect with themselves as a leader and with their peers in the team and gain clarity, insight and renewal towards strategic goals leading to positive change & action to accelerate execution & quality."
Why Choose a Corporate or Leadership Retreat?
Let’s face it - team-building activities that feel forced rarely lead to real change. They might be fun for a day, but they don’t address the core needs of your team or provide lasting value. Our retreats go deeper. We create experiences that not only strengthen bonds but also drive meaningful, long-term improvements in how your team works together.
Here’s the bottom line: companies that invest in effective team development see up to a 25% increase in productivity and a 21% boost in profitability. A well-executed retreat isn’t just a break from the office - it’s a smart investment in your organisation’s future.

In today’s rapidly changing business environment, investing in employee learning and development (L&D) is no longer optional—it’s a necessity. Companies recognise that their most valuable asset is their people, and continuous development is key to staying competitive. However, the challenge lies in ensuring that L&D investments yield tangible, long-term benefits. Traditional training programmes, while still valuable, often fall short of delivering the desired return on investment (ROI). This is where corporate retreats come into play, offering a more effective, holistic approach to employee development.
The Limitations of Traditional L&D Programmes
Before diving into why corporate retreats are a superior investment, it’s important to understand the limitations of conventional L&D methods. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge advocate of L&D initiatives - I've spent my entire career invested in being able to faciliate the best learning possible, over 20 years infact. That said, I also now run a retreat business.
1. One-Size-Fits-All Approach: Traditional workshops, seminars, and online courses are often designed for a broad audience, leading to generic content that may not address the specific needs of individual employees or teams.
2. Low Engagement Levels: Many traditional training sessions struggle with engagement, especially now many are virtual - it's hard to get people to be wholly present and not be tempted to multi task behind the screen. Employees may attend out of obligation rather than genuine interest, resulting in low retention of the material and minimal behaviour change.
3. Lack of Application: Classroom-style learning, whether in-person or virtual, often lacks opportunities for real-world application. Employees may learn new concepts, but without a practical context to apply them, the knowledge gained can quickly fade.
4. Isolated Learning: Traditional L&D programmes tend to focus on individual development, overlooking the importance of team dynamics and collaboration. This can lead to silos within the organisation, where some employees excel individually but struggle to work effectively as a group.
5. Short-Term Impact: The impact of traditional training is often short-lived. Without reinforcement and continuous learning opportunities, employees may revert to old habits, diminishing the long-term value of the investment.
Corporate Retreats: A Strategic Alternative?
Corporate retreats, by contrast, offer a comprehensive and immersive learning experience that addresses the shortcomings of traditional L&D programmes. Here’s why they provide a better ROI for your L&D budget:
1. Customised Learning Experiences: Retreats can be tailored to meet the unique needs of your organisation, whether you’re focusing on leadership development, team-building, innovation, or strategic planning. This customisation ensures that the content is relevant, engaging, and directly applicable to your business challenges.
2. Holistic Development: Corporate retreats combine professional development with personal growth, addressing both the technical and soft skills that are critical for success. Activities such as leadership exercises, team challenges, and wellness sessions create a balanced experience that nurtures the whole person, leading to more profound and lasting change.
3. Real-World Application: Retreats often involve interactive sessions, problem-solving exercises, and simulations that allow participants to apply what they’ve learned in real-time. This hands-on approach not only reinforces new skills but also fosters creativity and innovation by encouraging employees to think outside the box.
4. Enhanced Collaboration and Team Dynamics: By bringing employees together in an immersive setting, retreats break down silos and promote collaboration. Participants build stronger relationships, develop trust, and learn to work more effectively as a team. These improved team dynamics translate into better performance and productivity back in the workplace.
5. Increased Engagement and Motivation: The unique environment of a retreat—often in a scenic or inspiring location—naturally boosts engagement. Employees are more likely to be open-minded, enthusiastic, and committed to the experience. This heightened engagement leads to greater knowledge retention and a stronger commitment to applying what they’ve learned.
6. Long-Term Impact and Reinforcement: The impact of a retreat extends well beyond the event itself. The deep connections, shared experiences, and personal insights gained during a retreat create a foundation for ongoing development. Many organisations use retreats as a starting point for long-term L&D initiatives, providing continuous support and follow-up to reinforce learning.
Measuring the ROI of Corporate Retreats
Investing in corporate retreats might seem like a significant upfront cost, but when evaluated in terms of ROI, they often prove to be more cost-effective than traditional L&D programmes. Here’s how retreats deliver better ROI:
1. Higher Knowledge Retention: Because retreats engage participants in active learning and real-world application, employees are more likely to retain and use the skills they acquire. This leads to lasting improvements in performance and productivity, which can be directly tied to business outcomes.
2. Improved Employee Satisfaction and Retention: Employees value meaningful development opportunities. Retreats demonstrate that the company is invested in their growth and wellbeing, leading to higher job satisfaction and loyalty. This reduces attrition rates, saving the company significant costs associated with recruiting and training new hires.
3. Enhanced Leadership Capabilities: Leadership retreats, in particular, help develop strong, adaptable leaders who can drive the organisation forward. The ROI of strong leadership is immeasurable—effective leaders can inspire teams, navigate challenges, and foster a positive company culture that attracts top talent.
4. Stronger Team Performance: The improved collaboration and communication fostered during retreats lead to more cohesive and high-performing teams. This translates into better project outcomes, faster problem-solving, and more innovative solutions, all of which contribute to the company’s bottom line.
5. Positive Organisational Culture: Retreats contribute to a positive, inclusive, and growth-oriented organisational culture. A strong culture not only enhances employee engagement and productivity but also strengthens the company’s brand and reputation in the market.
In the evolving landscape of corporate learning and development, it’s crucial to invest in strategies that deliver meaningful and lasting results. Corporate retreats offer a powerful alternative to traditional L&D programmes, providing customised, immersive experiences that lead to real-world application, stronger teams, and more effective leadership. By investing in retreats, companies can achieve a higher return on their L&D budget, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and positioning themselves for long-term success.
When considering your next L&D investment, think beyond the classroom and consider the transformative potential of a corporate retreat. It’s not just an event—it’s an investment in your people, your culture, and the future of your organisation.

Now you're talking, right? Corporate retreats can happen in many places depending on your budget, how many people are going to be on it, what your company culture is like and what your purpose & goals are. This means it could be anything from an outdoor activity centre on Dartmouth UK or a swanky resort in Zanzibar (and anything in between). We will work with you to decide on the best location and venue and we can make plenty of suggestions based on our years of experience and our huge database of preferred suppliers (who we also happen to get great rates and deals off)
Gnerally speaking they are for senior leadership and executive teams operating at a strategic level. We do get asked to support some retreats for bigger groups at middle management level and can tailor them accordingly but we'd probably suggest breaking them into suitably sized cohorts if there's a big group of people.
It varies according to your objectives, goals and audience. As a general rule, the more senior the group, the smaller the cohort. A group of 4-6 is not unusual at this level and very effective. Equally an SLT of 12-15 works brilliantly and we can run single retreats for 30-50 (particularly in the UK).
This is a tricky question and it's so varied but it can be way less than you'd imagine!
If you think about sending a member of your team on a 2 day course that's likely to cost somewhere in the region of £1-2k (we've known organisations spend more than this on pizza for their teams!!)... you can get some much more for your investment with a retreat! £1-2k per person would allow you to take the team to a luxury venue overseas for a 3/4 day retreat with all food, accommodation and activities/development sessions included. Equally, we've run 2 day retreats that are more basic and 'outdoorsy' for around £350 per person.
