At Retreat Yourself, we know that the best breakthroughs happen when you step away from the daily grind and focus on what truly matters - your people.
If you’re tired of the usual team-building games and conference rooms that don’t deliver lasting results, it’s time to consider something different. Our corporate and leadership retreats offer a powerful way to invest in your team, with real returns in productivity, engagement, and performance.
What actually is a leadership retreat?
Well let's start with what it isn't... it's not a jolly!
It's not a work 'knees up' for the team to let their hair down.
The primary aim of a 'standard' (non business retreat is to create a space for individuals to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life, reconnect with themselves, and gain clarity, insight, and renewal – most people we know could most certainly do with a dose of that on prescription!
A retreat is a purposeful withdrawal or departure from our usual environment, routine, or activities for a period of time - often for rest, relaxation, reflection, personal growth, or spiritual development. They’re different to a standard holiday which is quite simply time off from everyday routine. Retreats are purposeful removal from your hectic environment to heal, rest, rejuvenate, recharge and take a step back to make some positive changes or modifications to the way you live so you don’t just return and jump straight back on the hamster wheel of life!
So when you translate that into the context of business and leadership then our definition of a leadership retreat would be...
"A space for a team to disconnect from the stresses and pressures of the business. To reconnect with themselves as a leader and with their peers in the team and gain clarity, insight and renewal towards strategic goals leading to positive change & action to accelerate execution & quality."
Why Choose a Corporate or Leadership Retreat?

Here’s the bottom line: companies that invest in effective team development see up to a 25% increase in productivity and a 21% boost in profitability. A well-executed retreat isn’t just a break from the office - it’s a smart investment in your organisation’s future.

In today's fast-paced business world, organisations are constantly seeking ways to enhance employee learning and development. While traditional training programmes have their place, there's a growing recognition that the environment in which people learn plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of that learning. Science tells us that individuals learn better when they are away from stress and in a relaxed, parasympathetic state. This is where the concept of corporate and leadership retreats comes into play. These retreats provide a unique opportunity to create an optimal learning environment, combining the benefits of nature, wellbeing activities, and a stress-free setting. Let's explore the science behind why this works and why a corporate retreat might be the most cost-effective way to achieve meaningful change and development.
The Science Behind Stress and Learning
Stress is an inevitable part of modern work life. Deadlines, meetings, and constant connectivity can create an environment where employees are in a perpetual state of alertness, or what scientists call the "fight-or-flight" response. This response is driven by the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body to deal with perceived threats. While this response is useful in short bursts, chronic stress can have a detrimental effect on learning and cognitive function.
When the body is under stress, the brain prioritises survival over learning. The release of stress hormones like cortisol can impair the brain's ability to form new memories, process information, and think creatively. Essentially, stress puts the brain in a state of tunnel vision, focusing on immediate concerns rather than long-term growth and development.
In contrast, the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the "rest and digest" system, is responsible for bringing the body back to a state of calm. In this state, the body can focus on growth, repair, and, crucially, learning. When the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, the brain is better able to absorb new information, think critically, and make connections that are essential for meaningful learning.
The Role of Nature in Promoting Learning
One of the most effective ways to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and reduce stress is by spending time in nature. Numerous studies have shown that being in natural environments can lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure, and improve mood. Nature has a calming effect on the mind, helping to reset the brain's stress response and create an environment conducive to learning.
The concept of "biophilia," which suggests that humans have an innate connection to nature, further supports the idea that natural settings are ideal for learning and creativity. When people are in nature, they are more likely to experience a state of "flow," where they are fully immersed in an activity, leading to deeper learning and greater retention of information.
Wellbeing Activities and Their Impact on Learning
In addition to the benefits of nature, wellbeing activities such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness exercises can further enhance the parasympathetic state. These practices are designed to reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and improve emotional regulation—all of which are crucial for effective learning.
For example, meditation has been shown to increase gray matter in areas of the brain associated with learning and memory. Similarly, yoga can help reduce the physical manifestations of stress, such as muscle tension, while also improving focus and concentration. Incorporating these activities into a corporate retreat can create a holistic environment where employees are not only relaxed but also mentally and physically prepared to learn and grow.
Why Corporate Retreats Foster Better Learning and Change
Given the science behind stress, nature, and wellbeing, it’s clear why corporate retreats are such powerful tools for learning and development. Here’s how retreats create the optimal environment for meaningful change:
1. Stress-Free Environment: By taking employees out of their usual work environment and into a peaceful, natural setting, retreats automatically reduce stress levels. This shift from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic state allows participants to focus on learning without the distractions and pressures of daily work life.
2. Immersive Learning Experiences: Retreats provide an opportunity for immersive learning, where employees can fully engage with the material without interruptions. This deep focus is essential for the kind of transformational learning that leads to lasting change.
3. Increased Creativity and Problem-Solving: The combination of a relaxed mind and a natural environment fosters creativity. Employees are more likely to think innovatively and come up with out-of-the-box solutions during a retreat, which can lead to significant business breakthroughs.
4. Stronger Team Dynamics: Retreats often include team-building activities that strengthen relationships and improve communication. When employees are in a relaxed state, they are more open to collaboration and building trust with their colleagues, leading to better team performance.
5. Long-Term Impact: The benefits of a retreat don’t end when the event is over. The relaxed, parasympathetic state experienced during the retreat can lead to a more positive outlook and a greater willingness to embrace change. Employees return to work not only refreshed but also more receptive to new ideas and ways of working.
Why Retreats Are a Cost-Effective Investment
While the idea of a corporate retreat might seem like a significant expense, it’s important to consider the return on investment. Traditional training programmes often come with hidden costs—low engagement, minimal retention, and a lack of real-world application—that can diminish their overall value. In contrast, the benefits of a retreat are not only immediate but also long-lasting, making it a cost-effective investment in your team's development.
Higher Engagement and Retention: Because retreats are designed to be engaging and immersive, employees are more likely to retain what they’ve learned. This means that the investment in a retreat leads to real behaviour change, rather than just a temporary boost in knowledge.
Improved Productivity: The relaxation and recharging that occur during a retreat can lead to improved productivity when employees return to work. The combination of reduced stress and renewed energy translates into better performance, which benefits the entire organisation.
Enhanced Employee Wellbeing: Investing in your employees’ well-being isn’t just good for them—it’s good for your bottom line. Healthy, happy employees are more productive, more engaged, and less likely to leave the company. A retreat that prioritises wellbeing is an investment in reducing turnover and increasing employee satisfaction, not to mention the avoidance of burnout which is fast becoming the next epidemic!
Strategic Alignment: Retreats provide a unique opportunity to align your team with the company’s strategic goals. By taking a step back from day-to-day operations, employees can gain a clearer understanding of the company’s vision and how they can contribute to it. This alignment leads to more focused and effective work, providing a strong ROI.
The science is clear: people learn better when they are out of a stressful environment and in a relaxed, parasympathetic state. Corporate retreats harness this science by providing a stress-free setting in nature, complemented by wellbeing activities that further enhance learning. The result is a powerful, immersive experience that leads to meaningful change, better teamwork, and stronger leadership.
Investing in a corporate retreat is not just about taking a break from the office—it’s about creating the optimal conditions for learning and development, ensuring that your L&D budget is spent in a way that delivers maximum return. In the end, a well-planned retreat could be the answer to unlocking your team’s potential without blowing the budget.

Now you're talking, right? Corporate retreats can happen in many places depending on your budget, how many people are going to be on it, what your company culture is like and what your purpose & goals are. This means it could be anything from an outdoor activity centre on Dartmouth UK or a swanky resort in Zanzibar (and anything in between). We will work with you to decide on the best location and venue and we can make plenty of suggestions based on our years of experience and our huge database of preferred suppliers (who we also happen to get great rates and deals off)
Gnerally speaking they are for senior leadership and executive teams operating at a strategic level. We do get asked to support some retreats for bigger groups at middle management level and can tailor them accordingly but we'd probably suggest breaking them into suitably sized cohorts if there's a big group of people.
It varies according to your objectives, goals and audience. As a general rule, the more senior the group, the smaller the cohort. A group of 4-6 is not unusual at this level and very effective. Equally an SLT of 12-15 works brilliantly and we can run single retreats for 30-50 (particularly in the UK).
This is a tricky question and it's so varied but it can be way less than you'd imagine!
If you think about sending a member of your team on a 2 day course that's likely to cost somewhere in the region of £1-2k (we've known organisations spend more than this on pizza for their teams!!)... you can get some much more for your investment with a retreat! £1-2k per person would allow you to take the team to a luxury venue overseas for a 3/4 day retreat with all food, accommodation and activities/development sessions included. Equally, we've run 2 day retreats that are more basic and 'outdoorsy' for around £350 per person.
